The BladeCenter blade is a true enterprise class server in every sense. What makes them unique is how they are designed and how they are run, powered, and managed. Unlike a stand-alone server that needs multiple power supplies, multiple fans, individual systems management, numerous cables, and a lot of space IBM blades are compact and simple. The blade contains all the necessities to run an application-the processors, memory, I/O and storage- everything else that would normally be duplicated in every server is pulled from the blade and placed in the chassis. Intel, PowerPC, or AMD processor based blades are all available utilizing this same “simple” approach to blade design. IBM blades are densely packaged to allow 14 of them to fit into a trim 7U of rack space. The density is impressive but that is not the most important thing that this change in design delivers.
